This all started in 2020, when the late chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat was looking for a way of lowering the rapid growth in the pension bills and revenue expense of the defence force. He came up with the idea of recruiting youth into the Indian army on a contract basis. Hiring the youth will cut down the expense spent on their training as well as other expenditure and hence, help in releasing funds for the military. To put it into simple words, the ‘Tour of Duty’ in an army means when a group of soldiers is allocated somewhere to perform their duties for a limited time period.
